Naphthalene-Based Superplasticizer (SNF or NSF) is a cost-effective, high-range water reducer widely used in concrete and cement mortar. As a second-generation concrete admixture, it is made from sodium naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate (SNF).

Limitations of Sodium Naphthalene Sulfonate

Compared with modern Polycarboxylate Superplasticizers (PCE) , SNF has several limitations:

  • Shorter Slump Retention: Concrete workability typically decreases after 30–60 minutes, making SNF less suitable for long transportation or extended placing times.
  • Higher Dosage Required: A larger dosage is generally needed to achieve the same water-reducing effect as PCE.
  • Less Suitable for High-Performance Concrete: Performance in High-Performance Concrete (HPC) and Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is generally inferior to that of PCE-based admixtures.
  • Environmental Considerations: SNF is produced using formaldehyde during the manufacturing process, while PCE technology is generally regarded as a more environmentally friendly solution.

Storage Temperature: Sodium naphthalene sulfonate should be stored in 10℃-40℃ temperature environment, without direct sunshine, without getting wet in the rain and leaking water, without mixing impurities, without evaporation of water.
